Project echo is a form of telementoring that links primary-care doctors with multi-disciplinary teams. This method is designed to improve care for patients suffering from complex health conditions, especially in communities that are rural and underserved.

The ECHO model was developed at the University of New Mexico in 2003 with a primary focus on treating hepatitis C patients from populations that are underserved and prisons. The ECHO model is now being replicated around the globe in various clinical areas including learn this here now diabetes, asthma, chronic pain and rheumatology. The ECHO model has been funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as well as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the GE Foundation and the Leona M. and Harry B Helmsley Charitable Trust.

During ECHO sessions participants present de-identified case studies, and take part in a group discussion with experts on content via videoconferencing. In this “all-teach and learn” style, instructors share expertise and knowledge to answer questions, provide feedback, and offer suggestions.

The ECHO model allows remote monitoring of patient outcomes. Specialists at the University of New Mexico follow each community provider’s treatment plans to ensure that their patients receive top-quality treatment. If a patient does not adhere to the prescribed treatment the doctors can suggest mid-course corrections. This helps to avoid treatment failure and increases the likelihood of a positive outcome. Specialists can also make use of the ECHO system for tracking data and identifying gaps in care. This information is then fed back to the local clinics who can then better serve their patients.
